Helpful Hints for Skiers & Riders

               SKI TIPS            SNOWBOARD TIPS

Think Nice and Easy with the New Easy-Turning Short-Shaped Skis

Long skis are difficult for first-timers to maneuver. That's why the new Easy Turners are incorporated into ski instruction programs. About half the length of traditional skis, they work with conventional ski boots but are much easier to turn and they stop better than longer skis.  Same goes for snowboarding. Get the board that fits you right!  Visit Mountainside Sports Shop for advice on which type of board to use or speak with a representative in our Rental Shop located in the building to the right of the Ticket Windows.

Take a Lesson: Don't Let Your Friend Teach You to Ski or Ride

Why let a friend try to teach you to ski or ride? That's what professional instructors are for. Think of classes as shortcuts to proficiency, confidence and fun.

Sign Up for a Learn-to-Turn Package: It's the Best Value
Wachusett offers great Learn to Turn first-time packages that include lesson, rental equipment and access to novice lifts for the day or evening session. The package price is the best deal at the mountain for learning to ski or snowboard.

Avoid Surprises: Call Ahead or Check the Web Site
It is a good idea to call ahead of time, or check our web site, to ask what time lessons begin.  Lessons for all levels are held daily at 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m., and 7:30 p.m., with First-Time-Only Classes at 5:30 pm.  Come to Wachusett at least one hour ahead of your lesson to allow time to be fitted for your rental gear. The busiest time in the rental shop is between 9-10 a.m.

Children Get Their Own Special Classes and Play Time- POLAR KIDS
Our specially-trained, kid-friendly instructors will help your children (ages 4-12) learn to ski or snowboard while having tons of fun. We place children in groups by and ability. In addition to on-hill instruction and training, snack and play times are provided. Free hot chocolate, juice, crackers or cookies will be available during breaks.

Dress in Layers: Wear warm, loose fitting clothing and dress in layers. When you are inside, you will want to shed a layer or two. Many new fabrics on the market are specially made for cold weather. Our friendly staff inside Mountainside Sports Shop (right in the base lodge) can help you if you are looking to upgrade your winter wardrobe. Woolen sweaters, turtlenecks, a warm hat and insulated gloves or mittens are essentials, along with waterproof outer garments, both top and bottom. Don't forget the long johns! Sunscreen is a must except on snowy days. Keep lip balm in a pocket and apply often. Pick up a pair of goggles at Mountainside Sports Shop; these protect against precipitation, sun and wind. Fleece garments, especially the new wind blocker fabric, are great for skiers.

Clothing Tips:

  • Don't wear blue jeans - they provide absolutely no warmth and get wet very easily.
  • Always wear gloves or mittens no matter what the temperature is.
  • You lose 90% of your body heat through your head; so buy a warm hat and wear it.
  • A fleece neck warmer is a great investment in warmth and comfort.
  • Socks should be wool or one of the newer synthetic fabrics that "wic" sweat away from the skin. Don't wear cotton socks because they get wet too easily. Stay away from layering your socks - layers of socks cut down on circulation and wiggle room that is essential to keeping your feet warm & dry.
