As a veteran of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette newsroom and member of the Eastern Ski Writers Association, I've written about skiing for 28 years. I learned to downhill at Wachusett, at night, when it was T-bars only, the lodge was an A-frame and the ticket booth was a tiny stand-alone. Lots of changes since then, here and elsewhere.
I've been around a bit since Mario taught me how to bend my knees and turn on the old beginner hill, but this is home. Skiing is still fun, and I'm still writing about it. |

Despite a gloomy forecast, the weather held up for the 49th Fitchburg Longsjo Classic. Here's a shot from Sunday's Downtown Criterium, with racers whizzing along in a 55-mile race that took loops up Main Street, around the Upper Common and down Boulder Drive. |

The 49th Annual Fitchburg Longsjo Classic is back -- with the Wachusett Mountain race today (Friday, July 4), with various groups of racers starting out from the ski area beginning between 9 a.m. and 12:42 p.m. This photo shows the women racing through the center of Princeton this afternoon. Yesterday was Time Trials on Rindge Road -- complete with thunderstorms, tomorrow is the Fitchburg State College Circuit Race, and Sunday is the Downtown Criterium.
Happy July Fourth! |

The National Ski Areas Association has selected Jeff Crowley, Carolyn Stimpson and David Crowley (above, left to right) as the recipients of this year’s Sherman Adams Award. The award, named after the former governor of New Hampshire and founder of Loon Mountain, has been presented annually since 1975 to an individual or individuals from an Eastern ski area who significantly influenced the ski industry. Carolyn, Jeff and David were selected for innovative programs that attract new skiers, sound area management that continually incorporates new technology, and environmental stewardship. |
