February is Olympic Month at Wachusett Mountain
PRINCETON, Ma. -- In honor of the Winter Olympic Games February 10 - 26 in Torino, Italy, Wachusett Mountain has declared February as Olympic Month. Starting in late January and continuing right through the closing ceremonies, Wachusett has scheduled a number of fun and exciting events with an Olympic flavor.
- The Next X Snow Search is scheduled January 21. The Wachusett event features a slopestyle competition for 9-13 year olds and the winner will earn a trip the national finals at in Vermont in March. A special Next X Snow Search all star event January 27-28 at Keystone, Co. featuring winners from the past two years will air on national television as a lead-in to NBC’s Olympic coverage on February 11.
- Former members of the U.S. Luge Team will be at Wachusett as part of the Verizon Luge Challenge on February 4-5. This two-day event gives people ages 10 and up a chance to experience what it's like to ride a luge down a small course set on the mountain.
- They may not be Olympic-caliber competitors but everyone always has a ton of fun at the annual WAAF Homemade Luge Challenge -- scheduled this year on February 10.
- Perhaps you'll see a future Olympic skier in one of the two exciting junior ski races in February:
- Feb. 5 - Michael Higgins Race (J-III, IV, V), GS Qualifier
- Feb.19- JIII's GS Tri-State Championships
- Also, maybe an up-and-coming Olympic snowboarder will be competing at a variety of snowboard competitions scheduled throughout February:
- Feb. 1- Terrain Park Series - Half-pipe.
- Feb. 4-5 Annual Ryan Joubert Snowboard Classic
- Feb. 8 - Terrain Park Series - Slopestyle.
- Feb.15 - Terrain Park Series – TBD
- Feb.18 - The Main Event Series - the premiere snowboard series in the East Coast for amateur or professional riders.
- Feb.25- USASA Snowboard Half-pipe Competition
- Some of Rhode Island’s top amateur ski racers will be on hand at Wachusett Sun. February 12 for the RI Ski Runners Championship Race.
- Even some of Massachusett’s bravest firefighters will be getting into the Olympic spirit as they compete in the 9th Annual MDA Firefighters Ski Muster on February 16.
- As the Olympics start to wind down, why not pull an all-nighter on skis at Wachusett’s Second Annual 24-Hour Ski Event on Friday, February 24. The night starts with a chance to win some of the $5,000 in prize money as part of the “Dash for Cash” presented by BayState Savings Bank & WXLO Radio
